Eligibility and Selection Criteria
Eligibility
Access is restricted to Aotearoa New Zealand based agencies that are:
Not-for-profits,
including community-based organisations and media groups; and
Legally incorporated organisations (Charitable Trusts, Incorporated
Societies etc). Organisations that are not legal entities must apply
under the umbrella of a not-for-profit agency that is a legal entity
Selection Criteria:
Projects must:
Be initiatives that have a Global Education focus:
- the subject matter of the educational materials and/or activities must be explicitly global,
- the educational materials and/or activities should highlight the relevancy of the issue to those living in Aotearoa New Zealand,
- the project must encourage critical thinking, reflection, and action encouraging New Zealanders to be responsible global citizens and to create a safe and just world;
Use proven learning approaches;
Identify clear learning objectives and outcomes;
Have a clear timeline
Be linked to relevant curricula, if intended for the formal education
sector;
Involve suitably skilled personnel;
Include a monitoring and evaluation component;
Be appropriate for the intended audience;
Demonstrate how the proposed activity will add to existing global
education activities available in Aotearoa NZ; and
Meet copyright requirements.

Schools and tertiary institutions
Private sector, for-profit
Government organisations
The Development Resource Centre
The Council for International Development
Please note: the funding relationship between GEF and applicant must be direct. GEF does not fund third parties, unless they are providing an umbrella service for a not-for-profit agency that is not a legal entity
Projects Unable to be Funded
Activities linked to fundraising i.e. no explicit or implicit requests for money or donations are allowed. However, it is acceptable for an organisation to use projects that it may be supporting overseas as examples/case studies;
Activities to promote a specific political party or its policies;
and
Activities to promote a particular religious belief.
As a general rule GEF will not fund:
- Media (books, films, posters, websites etc) developed without the input of an education specialist and / or unaccompanied by educational materials.
