Community-Led Development Trust

"Now We Are Fearless" educational resource pack

The purpose of this project is to produce and educational resource to accompany the DVD "Now We are Fearless". This documentary illustrates the community development work of the Women's Development Resource Centre in Tamil Nadu, India. The educational material will explore issues raised by the film to encourage student discussion and critical thinking about community development and international aid in global context. It will include clear links to both the old and new curricula with suggestions for classroom activities to encourage teacher use. The pack will be marketed to schools through Starters and Strategies teachers' magazine and librarian newsletters.

Get Reel: Movies that will make you think

Each month movies that give a perspective on global issues are screened at the Waikato Migrant Resource Centre, challenging New Zealanders to think carefully about their preconceptions of people who arrive here as refugees and migrants, and their actions. The movies are followed by a forum with a guest speaker and group discussion with accompanying opportunities to access further information/become involved.

Human Rights Communities in Education Trust

Resource Kit (Primary/Intermediate)

As part of the Human Rights in Education initiative (a collaborative initiative aimed at developing New Zealand schools and early childhood education centres as communities that know, promote and live human rights and responsibilities) this project is the development, writing and printing of a resource kit for primary and intermediate level.

Saffron Revolution Exhibition and Education Project

The project is to prepare a photographic exhibition, which will be initially launched at Parliament, to education New Zealanders on the realities of the brutally suppressed attempt by Burmese people to exercise their rights of free speech and peaceful public protest in Burma (Myanmar) in September 2007. The photographic exihibition will also be made available to other organisations, including union and church organisations, for display throughout Aotearoa to assist New Zealanders understand the global issues relevant to this struggle for democracy by the people of Burma.

UNCROC Leaflet

The aim of the project is to produce a leaflet on the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The leaflet will include an overview of Child Rights, including pictorial illustrations of six of the articles - right to care and protection, right to an education, right to good quality health care, right to clean water, right to play and the right to a name and nationality. A summary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in both English and Maori will be printed on the inside page.

United Nations Youth Association of New Zealand

The New Zealand Model United Nations Conference 2008

The event takes place from 28 June - 1 July 2008 in Wellington, and brings together around 200 secondary students, 50 university students, and some teachers from all around the country. The theme for the 2008 conference is 'Human Rights: A Struggle for Global Values?'. We have organised a range of interesting speakers and activities to make this conference an exciting learning experience for all those participating, and provide an environment conducive to encouraging delegates to think critically about an important universal issue.

Voice Arts Trust

"Voice It"

The 'Voice It' project involves three phases. The foundation of the project is a series of dynamic arts-based workshops with a group of refugee young people. The workshops foster a safe and creative environment, stimulate exchange and sharing, facilitate new forms of self-expression and enable the generation of a unique piece of radio programming. Phase Two involves the recording of this piece of radio programming and its broadcast out the community on World Refugee Day. The final phase encourages reflection and action through the development of a community resource. The resource will include a pod cast of the radio programme and a resource document containing fact sheets relating to global issues relevant to the participant group, documented stories from participants and pieces of creative work taken from the broadcast.

Global Issues Youth Summit

One-day youth summit, that inspires young people to think, reflect and take action on global issues. The day will consist of workshops and various key speakers that will target various global issues such as human rights, multiculturalism, trade justice, sustainable development, conflict resolution, disaster relief, global citizenship. global ecological integrity, global health and well-being. Space will also be given to encourage young people to take action on global issues through the help of various local global networks and a wide range of resources such as DIY developed by the YWCA and those produced by the Global Education Centre.
