The Global Education Fund

The Global Education Fund (GEF) is a contestable pool of money allocated through the New Zealand Aid Programme managed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT). GEF provides targeted and contestable funding for Global Education activities (see "What is Global Education?" below). The aim of GEF is to provide funding for small projects to develop awareness and understanding of global perspectives among New Zealanders, to encourage them to become responsible global citizens, and to create a safe and just world.

There are two funding rounds per year, closing 31 March and 31 October.

Individual grants are between $5000 and $15000 excl GST.

There are several eligibility and selection criteria requirements to meet (see ELIGIBILITY). The Global Education criteria must be met. This means:

  • the subject matter of the educational materials and/or activities must be explicitly global,
  • the educational materials and/or activities should highlight the relevancy of the issue to those living in Aotearoa New Zealand,
  • the project must encourage critical thinking, reflection, and action encouraging New Zealanders to be responsible global citizens, and to create a safe and just world.

What is Global Education?

Global Education raises awareness and understanding of how global issues affect the everyday lives of individuals, communities and societies, and how all of us can and do influence the global situation to create a safe and just world.

Global Education is seen as an essential component of aid and development programmes in the donor countries that are members of the OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development). It encompasses: development education, environmental studies, peace education, citizenship education, human rights education, social justice, and bi-cultural and multi-cultural studies.

Global Education has a place in both the formal and non-formal education sectors. Global Education encourages critical thinking, reflection, and action.
